UTPA was opened as Edinburg College, a two-year school in 1927. The school attained four-year status in 1951 and was known as Pan American College from 1952 to 1971 and Pan American University from 1971 to 1989. Baseball has been sponsored since 1955.
In 2015, the university merged with University of Texas at Brownsville to become the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
