Biographical Information[edit]

Osamu Tanabe pitched in the Nippon Pro Baseball for 9 years. His nephew Yuji Sogawa also played in the NPB

Tanabe signed with the Kintetsu Buffaloes in 1963, but he only pitched 6 games combined in his first two seasons. He was 5-9 with a 3.06 ERA in 1965, then he went 4-4 with a 2.80 ERA in 1966. Tanabe slumped to 1-7 with a 3.89 ERA in 1967, then he struggled again as his ERA was 5.08 in 23 appearances in 1968. He only pitched 12 games with a 4.29 ERA in 1969, and he went to the Chunichi Dragons after that season. Tanabe broke out in 1970, and he was 11-7 with a 1.98 ERA. He tied Tomoo Wako for 8th in complete games in the Central League, and he was 3rd in ERA (between Tsuneo Horiuchi and Masaji Hiramatsu). However, Tanabe slumped to 2-3 with a 4.62 ERA in 1971, and he announced his retirement after spending a year in the minors.

Overall, Tanabe was 23-31 with a 3.07 ERA, struck out 319 and pitched 626 1/3 innings in 9 seasons in NPB.
