Biographical Information[edit]
Nobuyoshi Yamada has pitched in Nippon Pro Baseball.
Yamada was drafted by the Orix Buffaloes in the 3rd round of the 2009 NPB draft, and he spent his first 6 seasons primarily in the NPB Farm Leagues; he only got 15 appearances with the big club. He went 2-7 with a 4.94 ERA in 2016, and his ERA was 8.76 in 4 starts in 2017. Yamada pitched 18 games in August, 2018, and he tied the NPB record for most appearances in a month (he shared the record with Kazuhisa Inao and Naoya Masuda). Yamada ended up collected 10 holds with a 3.80 ERA in 30 appearances that season, and he pitched 40 games with a 3.56 ERA in 2019.
The Fukui native notched 18 holds with a 3.89 ERA in 48 appearances in 2020, and he was 9th in holds in the Pacific League (tied with Shinya Kayama). He got 9 holds with a 2.27 ERA in 43 games in 2021, and he only pitched 12 games with a 4.35 ERA in 2022 due to the COVID-19. Yamada bounced back in 2023, and he recorded a solid 1.15 ERA in 32 relief outings. He also pitched 1/3 of a shutout inning in the 2023 Nippon Series Game 1, but the Buffaloes lost to the Hanshin Tigers in 7 games. Yamada's ERA was 2.08 in 50 games with 16 holds in 2024.
As of 2024, Yamada was 12-22 with a 3.75 ERA, collected 66 holds in 286 appearances, struck out 306 and pitched 341 innings in 13 seasons in NPB. He is tied Daisuke Ochi and Randy Williams for 99th in holds in NPB history.
