Biographical Information[edit]

Motokuni Sano played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 5 years. His father was from Greece, so he was registered as "Christo Sano" until 1982

Sano was drafted by the Kintetsu Buffaloes in the 3rd round of the 1977 NPB draft, and he only got 7 at-bats combined in his first seven seasons. He crushed 20 homers in the minors in 1980, and he led the Western League in homers and RBI. The Buffaloes traded him to the Yomiuri Giants for Shoichi Shimanuki in 1985, and he was 3-for-13 that season. He went 0-for-2 in 1986, and he didn't return to the big club again before announced his retirement in 1989. He also hit .105/.238/.105 for the then-minor league Miami Marlins in 1988. Sano later became the battery coach for the Yokohama BayStars from 1991 to 1992, and he coached in the Giants system from 1993 to 2000.
