Mottl was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 56th round of the 1995 amateur draft out of high school, but he chose to go to college. He represented the USA in the 1997 Intercontinental Cup, going 1-0 with a 2.30 ERA and 24 K in 15 2/3 IP; he led the team in IP (3 ahead of Jeff Austin) and strikeouts (11 ahead of Austin). The Kansas City Royals picked him in the 4th round of the 1998 Amateur Draft (one pick before Bud Smith), and he went 6-1 with a 3.79 ERA for the Lansing Lugnuts in 1998. He also 4 runs in 3 innings for the Spokane Indians in the same season. Ward went 2-9 with 7 saves and a 2.88 ERA in 1999 for the Charleston AlleyCats (striking out 93 in 84 1/3 IP). His 42 games pitched tied Ryan Brewer for 10th in the Royals chain and he was 8th in saves. That was his final season.
