Biographical Information[edit]
Michio Ukari played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 12 years.
Ukari signed with the Nishitetsu Lions in 1955, and he only pitched one game in 1956. He had a 2.41 ERA in 18 games in 1957, and the Lions released him. The Hiroshima Carp signed him, and Ukari went 6-7 with a 3.06 ERA in 1958. He improved to 11-10 with a 2.53 ERA in 1959, and he ranked 7th in ERA (between Yoshio Kitagawa and Tsutomu Ina) in the Central League. He was 6-10 with a 3.77 ERA in 1960, and he went 5-5 with a 2.34 ERA in 1961. Ukari recorded a 4.13 ERA with a 1-5 record in 23 appearances in 1962, and his ERA was 3.52 in 37 games in 1963.
The Kagoshima native was 9-10 with a 3.44 ERA in 1964, and he went 10-14 with a 2.75 ERA in 1965. Ukari was 6th in losses that season, tied with Makoto Inagawa, Gene Bacque and Pete Burnside. He then went 1-3 with a 3.74 ERA in 1966, and he was 0-2 with a 3.09 ERA in 1967. He completed the first perfect game of the minor Western League against the Kintetsu Buffaloes on June 10, and he announced his retirement after the 1967 season.
Overall, Ukari was 55-72 with a 3.11 ERA, struck out 515 and pitched 1,312 innings in 12 seasons in NPB.
