Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Matt Svanson was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 13th round of the 2021 amateur draft out of Lehigh University. He pitched in the Blue Jays system from 2021 to 2023, making it to High-A with the Vancouver Canadians of the Northwest League. On August 1, 2023, he was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals in return for SS Paul DeJong. The Blue Jays had suddenly found themselves in need of infield help due to an injury to SS Bo Bichette just before the trading deadline, but DeJong would fail to hit for them and be released with a couple of weeks. Meanwhile, the unheralded Svanson became a good catch for his new organization.

He finished the 2023 season in the AA Texas League with the Springfield Cardinals, going 2-0, 3.00 in 15 games. In 2024, he was 4-3, 2.69 in 53 games as Springfield's closer, picking up 27 saves, a figure that led the Texas League by a wide margin. He started the 2025 season in AAA with the Memphis Redbirds. His ERA was 1.59 after 4 games when he got the call to St. Louis, making his debut in relief against the New York Mets at Citi Field on April 17th. He gave up a hit but nothing else in his one inning of work in a 4-1 loss.
