Biographical Information[edit]

Masashi Date pitched in Nippon Pro Baseball for 5 years. His father Yasuji Date also played in NPB.

Date was drafted by the Hanshin Tigers in the 2nd round of the 2000 NPB draft, and he went 4-3 with a 3.75 ERA in 2001. He was 2-3 with a 3.32 ERA in 2002, and the Tigers traded him with Katsuhiko Yamada to the Nippon Ham Fighters for Yutaka Nakamura and Tsuyoshi Shimoyanagi. Date notched 9 saves with a 2.60 ERA in 51 relief outings in 2003, and he was 10th in appearances in the Pacific League (tied with Hisashi Ogura) and 5th in saves (tied with Daisuke Kato and Hiroshi Takamura). His ERA was 1.66 in 19 games in 2004, and he was traded to the Yomiuri Giants for cash. However, Date's ERA rose to 9.82 in 7 games in 2005, and he announced his retirement in 2006.

Overall, Date was 12-7 with a 3.33 ERA, struck out 117 and pitched 211 innings in 5 seasons in NPB.
