Biographical Information[edit]
Masao Yamamoto played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 14 years.
Yamamoto was drafted by the Nankai Hawks in the 6th round of the 1971 NPB draft, and he spent his first eight seasons primarily in the NPB Farm Leagues; he only got 61 at-bats combined for the top team. He hit .295/.337/.545 with 9 homers in 1980, and he finally got some chances in 1981. Yamamoto crushed 13 homers with a .288/.341/.468 batting line as Nankai's starting first baseman, but he then slumped to .212/.264/.323 in 1982. He played 61 games with a .271/.278/.346 batting line in 1983, and the Hawks traded him to the Yomiuri Giants for Nobuyoshi Suzuki. Yamamoto had a .309/.347/.529 batting line in 52 games in 1984, and he extended his solid performance in 1985 as he hit .329/.374/.553. However, he slumped to .067/.067/.100 in 1986, and the Giants released him. The Kintetsu Buffaloes picked him up, and Yamamoto had a .233/.281/.350 batting line in 1987 then he announced his retirement.
Overall, Yamamoto hit .262/.320/.426 with 287 hits and 37 homers in 14 seasons in NPB.
