Biographical Information[edit]

Manabu Saito played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 11 years

Saito was 15-10 with a 1.69 ERA in the Tohto University Base Ball League, and he won a MVP in 1984. He was drafted by the Chunichi Dragons in the first round of the 1986 NPB draft after they lost the lottery for the rights to Kazuhiro Kiyohara. He spent his first four seasons primarily in the NPB Farm Leagues, and he only pitched 24 games combined with the big club. The Dragons then traded him to the Daiei Hawks for Kiyoshi Yamanaka in 1990, and he had a 11.68 ERA in 8 games that season. He recorded a 3-5 record with a 5.90 ERA in 26 games in 1991, and his ERA was 6.14 in 11 games in 1992. Saito allowed 10 runs in 13 1/3 innings in 1993, and he only pitched 3 games with the top team in 1994. He had a career-high 46 appearances with a 2.59 ERA in 1995, but he only pitched 9 games in 1996 and he retired in the next season. He was the pitching coach for the Hawks from from 2003 to 2006, from 2011 to 2012 and from 2022 to 2023. He also coached their minor league team from 2008 to 2010 and from 2013 to 2021.

Overall, Saito was 7-10 with a 5.53 ERA, struck out 104 and pitched 174 innings in 11 seasons in the NPB.
