Biographical Information[edit]

Mamoru Sugitaya played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 5 years.

Sugitaya signed with the Korakuen Eagles when they were founded in 1937, and he hit .232/.286/.268 in 52 games in the spring season. He had a .255/.273/.294 batting line in the fall season, and he was 6th in hits in the Japanese Professional Baseball League (tied with Hidenosuke Shima) and 4th in RBI (between Kenjiro Matsuki and Shigeru Mizuhara). Sugitaya then hit .261/.286/.278 in the 1938 spring season, but he slumped to .162/.214/.190 in the fall season. He hit .182/.241/.205 in 82 games in 1939, and he struggled again as his batting line was .204/.259/.241 in 1940. Sugitaya was a player-manager in 1941, but he was 1-for-7 and his team had a 28-56 record. He announced his retirement after that season.

Overall, Sugitaya hit .217/.247/.260 with 204 hits and a homer in 7 seasons in NPB.
