The Rangers drafted him twice. Initially, he was taken in the 25th round of the 1986 amateur draft, a few picks after future manager Jeff Banister, but opted not to sign. He did sign after being taken in the 28th round of the 1987 amateur draft, one pick after pitcher Milt Hill and in the same round as future All-Star Bret Boone. He was signed by scout Joe Branzell.
He hit .303/.332/.329 with 25 stolen bases for the GCL Rangers his first campaign, leading the Gulf Coast League with 69 hits, then followed that with 24 steals for the Gastonia Rangers in 1988. He was also caught stealing 16 times in 1988, which tied Dave Cunningham for second-most in the South Atlantic League, behind Popeye Cole's 17. He had an 18-steal season for the Port Charlotte Rangers in 1990. 1993 was his one and only year at Triple-A; he hit .207/.284/.244 in 94 games for the Oklahoma City 89ers.
Overall, he hit .256/.310/.303 with 2 home runs, 165 RBI and 88 steals in 625 games over 7 seasons. He didn't hit his first career home run until 1992, his sixth professional season, averaging one every 1,073 at-bats for his career. After his professional career, he coached youth baseball teams in his hometown of Alexandria, VA.
