Biographical Information[edit]
Infielder Lenyn Sosa was signed by the Chicago White Sox as an international amateur free agent from Venezuela on July 2, 2016. He was only 16 years old at the time, and it took him a while tor each the majors, something that happened near the mid-point of the 2022 season. Losing the entire 2020 season to the COVID-19 pandemic when the minor leagues were shut down did not help him, of course. During his time in the minors, he posted some solid batting averages including .293 in 2018, .271 in 2021 and .315 in 2022, between the AA Birmingham Barons and AAA Charlotte Knights. He also struck out a lot, including topping 100 Ks in both 2019 and 2021, and not walking much, with 39 his top total. There was some question how his profile would translate to the majors, and he did not convince the doubters when he hit just .114 in 11 games in his first cup of coffee in the majors.
In 2023, he hit .271 in 71 games for Charlotte and also belted 17 homers after hitting 23 in 119 games the year before. In the American League, he hit .201 in 52 games with 6 homers and 14 RBIs for an OPS+ of 54. He improved across the board in 2024 when he batted .254 with 8 homers and 35 RBIs in 100 games, his OPS+ rising to 83, which may not sound like much but was actually pretty good on a team that lost an AL-record 121 games that season. He split his time between second and third base that season, then in 2025 alternated between second base and first base, the latter position being available after the Sox had traded incumbent Andrew Vaughn early in the season. His overall numbers were similar to his last couple of minor league seasons as in 140 games, he batted .264 with 22 homers and 75 RBIs. He walked just 18 times while striking out 127 times, but still managed an OPS+ of 100. He led the team in both home runs and RBIs, as well as hits with 137. One would think this would make him a hot commodity going forward, but he had never been considered a top-tier prospect before that, whereas the organization was full of players with that tag after loading up on them in the last few seasons.
The result of this was that he entered the 2026 season without a position and only had 33 at-bats in 12 games in the first two and a half weeks. he hit .212 with 3 doubles in that span but on April 13th the White Sox accepted an offer from the Toronto Blue Jays who needed to bolster their bench after a series of early-season injuries. In return, Toronto gave up Jordan Rich, an outfielder drafted in 2025 who had yet to make his pro debut, and future considerations. He was immediately added to the Jays' roster and made his debut on April 14th as a pinch-hitter for C Brandon Valenzuela against the Milwaukee Brewers. He singled and scored a run as part of a comeback from a two-run deficit, then started at second base the next day.
