Relief pitcher Kramer Champlin began his professional career in 2011.
He was originally drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 37th round of the 2008 amateur draft, a couple picks ahead of pitcher Bradin Hagens, but opted not to sign. He did ink a contract after being taken by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 33rd round of the 2011 amateur draft.
The first three years of his professional career were mediocre, as he posted ERAs of 6.19, 4.09 and 4.23, respectively -- despite striking out 166 batters and allowing only 41 walks in 173 2/3 innings. In part, the longball was his downfall, as he surrendered 19 of them -- or one every 9.14 innings pitched. In total, he allowed 178 hits in that span.
Though he put it together ERA-wise in 2014 -- he had a 2.31 mark in 20 games between the GCL Blue Jays and Dunedin Blue Jays -- the then-24-year-old, injury-prone twirler was released by the Blue Jays following the campaign anyway. In January 2015, he was suspended 50 games for testing positive for a drug of abuse. He signed on with the independent Traverse City Beach Bums in 2015 and went 10-6 with a 2.05 ERA in 17 starts. Back with the same club in 2016, he went 5-7 with a 2.81 ERA in 19 starts. Back with Traverse City in 2017, he went 7-9 with a 4.44 mark in 18 starts.
