Biographical Information[edit]

Kozo Goi played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 6 years.

Goi signed with the Kintetsu Buffaloes in 1950, and he went 8-15 with a 3.86 ERA in his first season. He completed a shutout against the Mainichi Orions in his debut, and he was the first Pacific League pitcher who got a shutout in his first game. Goi tied Tokuji Kawasaki and Victor Starffin for 6th in losses. He then recorded a 2.50 ERA in 7 games in 1951, and he also hit .242/.242/.364 as a batter. He crushed the first pinch-hit sayonara home run of the PL, against Jiro Noguchi on September 16. Goi was 8-11 with a 4.26 ERA and a league-leading 8 balks in 1952, and he improved to .344/.360/.385 at the plate. He was a full-time batter in 1953, and he recorded a .247/.302/.346 batting line in 102 games as Kintetsu's starting third baseman. Goi returned to the mound in 1954, but he was 1-4 with a 5.45 ERA and he announced his retirement.

Overall, Goi hit .258/.295/.350 with 161 hits and 7 homers in 5 seasons in NPB. He was 17-31 with a 4.11 ERA, struck out 159 and pitched 468 2/3 innings as a pitcher.
