Biographical Information

Koji Mise is a former Pacific League Rookie of the Year.

Mise played in the industrial leagues (for NTT Nishi Nihon Chugoku) after high school. He was picked by the Daiei Hawks in the 7th round of the 2003 NPB draft. He had a big rookie year, going 4-3 with 28 saves, a 3.60 ERA, .191 opponent average, .98 WHIP and 71 strikeouts in 67 2/3 IP in 2004. He tied Yukiya Yokoyama for the PL lead in both save points and saves. He won NPB Most Valuable Setup Pitcher Award and NPB Rookie of the Year honors; it had been 14 years since someone won Middle Reliever of the Year in their pro debut. He also became the oldest Rookie of the Year in Nippon Pro Baseball at age 28 years, 7 months. Additionally, he made the All-Star team.

The left-hander went 2-2 with 18 saves, a .184 opponent average and a 4.73 ERA in 45 2/3 IP and 54 games in 2005. He started the season very fast (10 saves in 24 games, a NPB record) but slumped quickly. He also ran into trouble in June when he plunked Hanshin Tigers star Tomoaki Kanemoto; Mise was ejected and Tigers fans surrounded the Hawks bus to threaten Koji. After that, he lost his control and was sent to the minors; Takahiro Mahara wound up replacing him as closer. As a LOOGY in 2006, Mise went 1-3 with a save and a 4.68 ERA, then 0-1 with a 2.45 ERA and .93 WHIP in 28 games (18 1/3 IP) in 2007. He was 2-1 with a 4.11 ERA in 44 outings in 2008 but 0-1 with a 6.30 ERA in 2009.

Mise started 2010 totally ineffective (5 R, 6 H, 3 BB in 3 1/3 IP) and was dealt in June to the Chunichi Dragons for Masaumi Shimizu. He was no better with Chunichi (5 R, 5 H, 4 BB in 3 IP, 0-1) but still made their roster for the 2010 Japan Series. Mise notched 7 holds with a 4.08 ERA in 44 relief outings in 2011, but he then missed most of the 2012 season due to left elbow injury. He had a solid 1.77 ERA in 20 appearances in 2013, and he announced his retirement in 2014. Mise then became a scout for the Dragons, signing Hiroto Fuku.

Overall, Mise was 11-13 with a 4.05 ERA, collected 47 saves and 45 holds in 317 appearances, struck out 242 and pitched 284 2/3 innings in 11 seasons in NPB. The sidearmer's repertoire included a slider, shuuto, forkball, cutter and fastball (high 80s).
