Biographical Information[edit]
Koichi Nakayama played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 8 years.
Nakayama was drafted by the Nankai Hawks in the 5th round of the 1969 NPB draft, and he went 1-6 with a 3.95 ERA in 1970. His ERA was 9.00 in 4 games in 1971, and he improved to a 3.52 ERA in 34 appearances in 1972. Nakayama was 1-3 with a 3.57 ERA in 1973, and he allowed 3 runs including a homer to Tsuneo Horiuchi in the 1973 Nippon Series Game 3. He pitched 2 shutout innings in Game 4, and the Hawks lost to the Yomiuri Giants in 5 games. Nakayama had a 8-9 record with a 3.04 ERA in 1974, and he was 8th in ERA in the Pacific League (between Hajime Kato and Hiroaki Fukushi).
The Chiba native went 10-7 with a 3.18 ERA in 1975, and he was 12-11 with a 3.53 ERA in 1976. He was 10th in wins (tied with Yoshinori Toda and Takashi Yamaguchi) and 10th in losses (tied with Choji Murata, Osamu Higashio and Takashi Imoto). However, he missed the next two seasons due to right shoulder injury, and the Hawks traded him to the Yakult Swallows for Keitoku Yamashita. Nakayama failed to return to the top team, and he was released after the 1979 season. The Hanshin Tigers signed him, but he allowed 4 runs in 2/3 of an inning in 1980 and he announced his retirement.
Overall, Nakayama was 33-41 with a 3.54 ERA, struck out 431 and pitched 683 1/3 innings in 8 seasons in NPB.
