Biographical Information

Kazumasa Ichikawa played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 11 years.

Ichikawa was drafted by the Kintetsu Buffaloes in the 6th round of the 1976 NPB draft, but he refused to sign and went to college. He dominated the Tokyo Metropolitan University League, and he hit .399 with 9 homers and 79 RBI. Ichikawa won two MVPs and five Best Nine awards as a catcher, and he won a Triple Crown in 1978. The Taiyo Whales selected him in the 4th round of the 1980 NPB draft, and he only got 10 at-bats combined in his first three seasons. Ichikawa was 5-for-30 in 1984, and he went 10-for-54 in 1985. He hit .147/.171/.206 in 1986, and he had a .151/.205/.205 batting line in 1987. Ichikawa took the starting catcher spot from Yoshiharu Wakana in 1988, and he played 96 games with a .282/.356/.415 batting line. He crushed 5 homers with a .232/.267/.333 batting line in 1989, and he recorded a .283/.340/.417 batting line in 1990. However, he lost his spot when Motonobu Tanishige shined in 1991, and he was 12-for-46 that season. Ichikawa went 7-for-23 in 1992, and he announced his retirement.

Overall, Ichikawa hit .238/.293/.335 with 214 hits and 14 homers in 11 seasons in NPB.
