Justin Lord pitched six seasons in the minors then became a coach.
Lord was All-State in high school in 1998. He had a 6-6, 2.64 record in junior college in 2000. Transferring to FSU, he went 2-3 with 11 saves and a 3.26 ERA in 2001. He tied for 9th in NCAA Division I in saves. Undrafted, he signed with the Kansas City Royals. He allowed 3 runs (one earned) in 3 innings for the 2001 Spokane Indians then missed 2002 due to Tommy John surgery. The Alabama native returned in 2003 to go 3-1 with a save and a 3.92 ERA in 19 games for the Burlington Bees and 0-2 with a 4.09 ERA in 13 contests for the Wilmington Blue Rocks; for the season, his WHIP was only 1.01. The Pittsburgh Pirates took him in the AAA phase of the 2003 Rule V Draft.
Justin saw limited action in his season in the Pirate system, pitching for the Hickory Crawdads (0-1, 8 R in 6 IP) and Lynchburg Hillcats (2-2, 2.96 in 14 G). He then underwent Tommy John surgery again, missing all of 2005. Out of Organized Baseball, Lord spent three seasons with the independent St. Paul Saints. In 2006, he posted a 11-3, 4.20 record, only walking 20 in 120 innings. He tied for third in the American Association in wins, behind Cory Walters and Lindsay Gulin. He fell to 4-4, 4.24 with the 2007 Saints, walking 9 in 68 innings. In 2008, he ended his playing career with a 5-9, 4.04 season for St. Paul. He tied for 4th in the AA in defeats.
Overall, Lord had gone 25-22 with a save and a 4.16 ERA in 96 games in pro ball (53 starts). In 385 innings, he allowed 412 hits and 78 walks while striking out 228.
Immediately after ending his playing career, Lord became a pitching coach.
