Biographical Information[edit]
Joseph Meyer was a first baseman whose baseball career grew out of University of Notre Dame, where he played on the 1916 and 1917 baseball teams, won letters in baseball and basketball, and completed his degree in 1919.[1][2] During World War I he served at the United States Naval Reserve School at Municipal Pier in Chicago, where he managed and coached athletic teams before returning to Notre Dame to finish his architectural course.[1]
Before entering professional baseball full-time, Meyer had been athletic director of the prep department at Notre Dame.[1] He signed with the Chicago White Sox and may have played briefly with the Columbus Senators in 1918 before being drafted.[6][1] He was on the Cincinnati Reds reserve list in 1919 and played first base for the South Atlantic League champion Columbia Comers, on loan from the club.[1][7][8] He hit .315 and slugged .440.
Known as "Chief," Meyer later became a prominent coach and athletic administrator in Cincinnati. He served at Xavier University as a coach and athletic director, and coached the school's baseball team in 1926 and 1929.[9][10][11] He later coached baseball at the University of Cincinnati from 1941 through 1943.[12][13][14]
As an architect, he helped design Xavier Fieldhouse and Xavier Stadium in the 1920s.[6]+
