Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Jose Oyervides spent 19 seasons in professional baseball, playing from 2002 to 2021 (missing 2004).

Signed as an undrafted free agent by the San Diego Padres, he began his career in the bullpen, where he proved to be a strikeout ace. Despite going 0-4 with a 4.31 ERA his first year, he had 58 Ks in 31 1/3 innings for the Idaho Falls Chukars, averaging 16.7 K/9 IP. The next year, with the Eugene Emeralds, he was 1-4 with 55 strikeouts in 41 innings (12.1 K/9). After missing 2004, he returned as a starter in 2005, where he had some success. He posted sub-4.00 ERAs for the Mobile BayBears in 2005 and 2006, belying his combined 13-21 record. By then, his K rates had declined to more human levels.

After a down 2007, he joined the Houston Astros chain in 2008, making his only appearance in affiliated Triple-A—he lasted 3 innings in a start for the Round Rock Express, posting a 9.00 ERA and taking the loss. He then embarked on a long career in the Mexican League, with a few stops in the stateside independent ranks, as well (Edinburg Roadrunners, 2010-2012). He was a regular face with the Acereros de Monclova, spending seven seasons with them. Perhaps his best campaign in the Mexican League was 2016, when he went 10-2 with a 2.78 ERA in 19 starts for Monclova, striking out 120 in 103 2/3 innings. He was a Mexican League Mid-Season All-Star five times, in 2010, 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2017. He also won the league's Comeback Player of the Year honor in 2018.

He also spent many years in the Mexican Pacific Winter League, mostly with the Mayos de Navojoa.

At all levels, he went 116-103 with a 4.44 ERA in 516 games (309 starts). In 1,854 innings, he allowed 1,905 hits and 806 walks (1.462 WHIP), while striking out 1,604 batters. He led the league in walks multiple times.
