He was taken by the club in the 8th round of the 1992 amateur draft, a couple picks after catcher Mike Hubbard. He had some success in the early going, including a .417 on-base percentage (24 BB in 27 G) for the Martinsville Phillies in 1992, a .293 average for the Batavia Clippers in 1993 and a .297/.342/.508 line with 12 homers and 53 RBI for the Spartanburg Phillies in 1994. After being named the #10 prospect in the Phillies chain by Baseball America (one slot after pitcher Ryan Nye) going into 1995, he graduated to High A, where he spent the next three seasons, hitting .207/.297/.280 in 82 games for the Clearwater Phillies.
Overall, he hit .261/.337/.401 with 23 home runs and 135 RBI in 239 games over 6 seasons.
His father, Ken McMullen, played in the major leagues from 1962 to 1977.
