Johnny was born in 1853 in Philadelphia, PA. He got into two games with the 1873 Philadelphia Whites and then became a regular outfielder with the 1874 Baltimore Canaries. He was also a regular for the 1875 New Haven Elm Citys.
Although he had hit under .200 in 1874 an 1875, he was able to become a regular with the 1876 Louisville Grays of the brand-new National League, and hit four points above the team's batting average. In 1877, although he played a few games with the National League's Cincinnati Reds, he spent most of the season with a couple minor league teams based in Philadelphia andPittsburgh, PA.
Following his baseball career, Ryan was a Philadelphia police officer. He died when he was kicked by a prisoner after making an arrest following a barroom altercation.
