Biographical Information[edit]
First baseman John Deutsch played professionally from 1989 to 1993, peaking at Double-A.
He was a college star, being named the Division III ABCA Player of the Year in 1989, a Division III American Baseball Coaches Association All-American each year from 1987 to 1989 and the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship Most Outstanding Player in 1987, all of which culminated in him being elected to the College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2020.
The Los Angeles Dodgers chose him in the 5th round of the 1989 amateur draft, a couple picks after catcher Darron Cox. For the Great Falls Dodgers his first season, he hit .296/.416/.435 with 6 homers and 43 RBI in 64 games. His average fell to .255 in 1990, though he managed 10 home runs and 74 RBI for the Bakersfield Dodgers. In 1991, he rebounded to .300/.372/.448 with 12 home runs and 66 RBI for the Vero Beach Dodgers and in 1992, he hit 268/.329/.452 with 17 home runs and 52 RBI between the Bakersfield Dodgers and San Antonio Missions. He joined the Chicago Cubs system for 1993, but hit just .246/.364/.438 in 43 games to wrap up his career.
Overall, he hit .276/.367/.427 with 50 home runs and 248 RBI in 462 games over 5 seasons.
