Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Jay Spurgeon only had a brief major league career, making 7 appearances including 4 starts for the Baltimore Orioles at the end of the 2000 season. He went 1-1 with an ERA of 6.00 over 24 innings.

His minor league career lasted from 1997 to 2002. The Orioles drafted him out of the University of Hawai'i at Manoa in the 8th round of the 1997 amateur draft, three years after the Houston Astros had taken him in the 46th round coming out of high school in 1994. He had a couple of very good minor league seasons in the Orioles' system, going 11-3, 2.64 for the Delmarva Shorebirds of the South Atlantic League in 1998 and 13-3, 3.12 between three teams in 2000, before his call-up to Baltimore. His final two pro seasons were spent in AAA with the [Rochester Red Wings]]. He went 3-5, 4.55 in 15 games in 2001, and 4-14, 5.38 in 29 games in 2002, before calling it a career.
