Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Jarret Martin played professionally from 2010 to 2019. Though he pitched briefly (7 games) at Triple-A, he never ascended to the majors.
He was drafted twice. He was initially taken by the Baltimore Orioles in the 19th round of the 2008 amateur draft, but opted not to sign. The Orioles took him again in the 18th round of the 2009 amateur draft, a few picks after pitcher Anthony Vasquez and in the same round as future star Marcus Semien, and that time, he signed. He was signed by scout Gil Kubski.
He posted good strikeout numbers in the early going, with 68 Ks in 59 2/3 innings for the Bluefield Orioles in 2010 (though he also led the Appalachian League with 46 walks allowed), but struggled to a 5-12, 4.96 ERA line for the Delmarva Shorebirds in 2011. He was second in the South Atlantic League in losses, behind Shane Greene's 14. On December 8 of that year, he was traded with fellow minor leaguer Tyler Henson to the Los Angeles Dodgers for pitcher Dana Eveland. He spent three seasons in the Dodgers system and again posted good strikeout numbers, with nearly a K per frame on average his first year (2012), 106 strikeouts in 96 1/3 innings his second campaign and 64 Ks in 54 1/3 innings his third. On December 18, 2014, he was traded with fellow minor leaguer Matt Long to the Milwaukee Brewers for minor league catcher Shawn Zarraga. He pitched just 6 innings in the Brewers system, posting a 16.50 ERA. He joined the independent ranks in 2016. After posting a 0.98 ERA with 27 Ks in 18 1/3 innings for the York Revolution to begin 2017, he was scooped up by the San Francisco Giants and went 4-2 with a 2.04 ERA in 37 games (1 start) for the Richmond Flying Squirrels. Joining the Oakland Athletics system for 2018, he reached Triple-A for the first time, making 3 appearances for the Nashville Sounds. He wrapped up his career after a poor 2019.
Overall, Martin went 25-45 with a 4.59 ERA in 301 games (77 starts) at all levels, including his time in the Arizona Fall League and Puerto Rico Winter League. In 603 1/3 innings, he allowed 520 hits and 437 walks (1.586 WHIP), while striking out 633 batters. He was a Midwest League Mid-Season All-Star in 2012.
