Biographical Information[edit]
Infielder James Triantos was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the second round of the 2021 amateur draft out of a high school in the northern Virginia suburbs of Washington, DC. He was a two-way player in high school, pitching his high school to the state championship, but also batting .700 with excellent athleticism. Being on the smaller side at 5' 11", it was logical for the Cubs to turn him into a full-time position player.
In his first taste of professional ball in 2021, he hit .327 in 25 games for the ACL Cubs, then attended spring training with the major league team as a non-roster invitee in 2022. That season, he was with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans of the Carolina League where he played 113 games and hit .272/.335/.386 and scored 74 runs while being successful on 20 of 23 stolen base attempts. In 2023, he spent the bulk of the season with the South Bend Cubs of the Midwest League before getting a late-season promotion to AA and the Tennessee Smokies of the Southern League. His batting line was .287/.364/.391 in 83 games, after which he played in the Arizona Fall League. He hit a scorching .417 in 22 games for the Mesa Solar Sox and was named the league's Hitter of the Year and played in the Rising Stars Game. In 2024, he started off at Tennessee, hitting .300 in 89 games and on August 6th was promoted to the AAA Iowa Cubs. He was named to play in the 2024 Futures Game and was the Southern League Player of the Month for June. He hit a combined .300/.346/.427 in 115 games between the two stops, with 75 runs and 47 stolen bases.
