Biographical Information[edit]
Outfielder Jacob Young began his professional career in 2021. He was taken by the Washington Nationals in the 7th round of the 2021 amateur draft; his signing bonus was $275,000. He played for the Fredericksburg Nationals his first year, hitting .208/.283/.267 with no home runs, 5 RBI and 13 stolen bases in 26 games. He spent 2022 back with Fredericksburg, where he hit .262/.360/.331 with 52 stolen bases in 115 games.
He reached the majors towards the end of the 2023 season when he hit .252 in 33 games for an OPS+ of 84, after batting .305 in 112 games between the High-A Wilmington Blue Rocks, the AA Harrisburg Senators and AAA Rochester Red Wings, the latter for just 4 games. He then won the starting center field job in Washington in 2024 in spite of his basically skipping AAA. He played 150 games and hit .256 with 3 homers and 36 RBIs. His OPS+ was 86, so it was his defensive play that kept in in the line-up. He returned to the starting center field job in 2025, although there was no improvement in his offensive contribution. His ability to make spectacular catches went on unabated, however, with a particularly brilliant example on September 21st at Citi Field when he snatched a ball off the top of the wall, only to watch it fall from his glove. He then kicked it upwards with his right foot, and managed to glove it again to complete the out.
Most sources list him as being born in the non-existent Ponte Vedra, FL, which is likely an improper contraction of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL.
