Biographical Information

Pitcher Ian Seymour was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 2nd round of the 2020 amateur draft. After signing with the Rays, he took advantage of the forced inactivity caused by the COVID-19 pandemic to complete his degree at Virginia Tech.

He was a winner in his major league debut for Tampa Bay on June 9, 2025, as he pitched two innings of hitless relief in a 10-8 extra innings win over the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park, a ballpark where he had attended a great number of games growing up in nearby Westborough, MA.

On June 25, 2026, he acted as the bulk man in what was almost the second no-hitter in Rays history. Casey Legumina recorded the first four outs as the opener in a planned bullpen game against the Kansas City Royals at Tropicana Field, and Seymour followed with a tremendous performance, not giving up a hit while pitching 6 2/3 innings. His only blemish was a walk of Starling Marte in the 6th, while he struck out seven. Craig Kimbrel lost the no-hitter when he gave up a two-run homer to Carter Jensen with one out in the 9th, but Tampa won handily, 13-2. Seymour became the third major league pitcher since 1980 to throw at least 6 2/3 innings of hitless relief, joining Félix Peña (2019) and Jake Westbrook (2004).
