Biographical Information[edit]

Henry Burns was a native of Nashua, NH, and was one of the top pitchers in New England in the late 1880s[1]. With the Lowell Browns in 1887, he led the New England League with 32 wins and 137 strikeouts. In 1888, with the club then called the Lowell Chippies, he again led the league with 224 strikeouts, while winning 23 games. After an abbreviated 1889 season due to a salary dispute[2] and arm issues[3], he had a bounce-back year in 1890 with Worcester, MA in the Atlantic Association, winning 11 games before the team disbanded, pitching with Moncton, NB in the New Brunswick League afterwards[4].

In the following years, Burns continued to pitch in New England, both professionally and with semi-pro teams. He maintained residence in Nashua, serving as owner and manager of the city's club in the New England League in 1901 and 1902. He served in the New Hampshire House of Representatives in 1933 and died in Nashua in 1937[5].
