Perry served as the hitting coach for the Michigan Battle Cats in 1997 and the Pawtucket Red Sox in 1998. He spent 1999 as the Boston Red Sox minor league hitting coordinator. He was hitting coach of the Seattle Mariners from 2000 to 2002 and the Pittsburgh Pirates from 2003 through 2005.
In November 2005, he was hired to be the hitting coach for the Oakland Athletics for 2006, and he spent one season in that job. Perry became the Chicago Cubs hitting coach in 2007. He was fired in June 2009 and replaced by Von Joshua. In 2010 Perry was the hitting coach of the Pawtucket Red Sox and in 2011, he returned to the A's as hitting coach. In 2012 he returned to Pawtucket for his third stint as hitting coach. He was the hitting coach for Team USA at the 2013 World Baseball Classic. He then joined the Detroit Tigers organization as hitting coach of the Erie SeaWolves in 2013-2015.
Perry is the cousin of Dan Driessen.
