Biographical Information[edit]

Gary Shade played one season in the minors. The San Francisco Giants took him in the 48th round of the 1967 amateur draft out of high school but he did not sign. In the 1970 College World Series, he joined John Grubb and Mike Markl as the All-Tournament outfielders. He was the only Ohio player chosen to the All-Tournament team; teammates included Mike Schmidt and Steve Swisher.

The Pittsburgh Pirates chose Shade in the secondary phase of the 1971 amateur draft and assigned him to the Niagara Falls Pirates. That summer, he hit .278/.368/.354 with 8 steals in 10 tries, 15 runs and 21 RBI in 53 games. He struggled in the outfield defensively, fielding .932. Despite a reasonably productive campaign, it was his only season in pro baseball.
