Biographical Information

Outfielder Garrett Mitchell was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers with the 20th pick of the first round of the 2020 amateur draft, out of UCLA. It was his second time being drafted, as the Oakland Athletics had taken him in the 14th round on the 2017 amateur draft when he was coming out of high school, but he declined their offer in order to attend college.

Mitchell made his way quickly to the majors, after being unable to start his professional career until 2021 as the minor leagues were shut down by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. He played 64 games between the Class A Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and AA Biloxi Shuckers that first season, batting an exceptional .359 in 29 games at the first stop, but only .186 at the higher level. In 2022, he missed some time with an injury and had a brief rehabilitation assignment in the Arizona Complex League, but otherwise did very well, batting .277 in 44 games at Biloxi, and .343 in 20 games for the Nashville Sounds of the AAA International League. That earned him a late-season call-up to Milwaukee, where he hit .312 with his first two career homers in 28 games.

Mitchell's strong showing in his first cup of coffee in the majors earned him the starting job in centerfield for the Brewers at the start of the 2023 season. On April 4th against the New York Mets, he hit his first two homers of the year in remarkable circumstances: he first completed a string of three consecutive homers by Brewers hitters off ace Max Scherzer in the 6th inning, going deep after teammates Rowdy Tellez and Brian Anderson had done so, then in the 7th combined again with Anderson to go back-to-back in a 9-0 Milwaukee win. Both events were historic, as the Brewers had not hit three consecutive long balls in one game since 2018, and there had never been two batters to homer back-to-back in consecutive innings in team history. In fact, it had not been done in the major leagues since 1998. Unfortunately what looked like a promising season was derailed by an injury, as he suffered a shoulder luxation on April 18th, went on the injured list the next day, and did not return to the Brewers until September 28th. As a result, he played just 19 games that year, hitting .246 with 3 homers and 7 RBIs.

He was again a victim of the injury bug in 2024 when he broke a finger in spring training and as a result only played his first major league game on July 1st. In spite of this, he managed to get some more extended playing time at the major league level for the first time, hitting .255 in 69 games, with 8 homers and 21 RBIs for an OPS+ of 124. He saw his first action in the postseason that year, going 1 for 4 with a homer as Milwaukee lost to the New York Mets in dramatic fashion in the Wild Card Series. That homer came in Game 2 on October 2nd, after he had come into the game as a pinch-runner in the 6th: he took Phil Maton deep in the bottom of the 8th, putting Milwaukee in the lead in a game they would win by a 5-3 score. Things looked set for a great season in 2025 but it was once again cut short by an injury: after appearing in 25 of the Brewers' first 27 games, he went down with a left oblique strain in late April, then he injured his shoulder while playing a rehabilitation game in AAA in July and was done for the season. He was batting just .206 with an OPS+ of 62 at the time of the original injury, so it was in effect a lost season.

He finally managed to start a season healthy and make it through the first few months without an injury in 2026. He had the first four-hit game of his career on July 1st, in a 4-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds, as the Brewers were having a great year - they had finished June at 52-31, five and a half games in front of the second-place Chicago Cubs in the NL Central, with Garrett the regular center fielder.

Mitchell's cousin, Gavin Grahovac, was the #81 overall pick in the 2026 amateur draft. Gavin's father, Mike Grahovac, played in the minor leagues from 1989-1991.
