Fumio Sato pitched in Nippon Pro Baseball for 6 years.
Sato signed with the Kintetsu Buffaloes in 1972, but he spent his first four seasons in the NPB Farm Leagues. He was often used as a batting practice pitcher. He finally got some chances in 1977, and he notched 6 saves with a 6-3 record and a 3.45 ERA in 39 relief outings. He was 5th in saves in the Pacific League, tied with Masanori Murakami, Tamotsu Nagai and Choji Murata. Sato collected 6 saves with a 3.45 ERA in 34 games in 1978, and he ranked 3rd in saves (between Murakami and Hisashi Yamada). He recorded a 2.85 ERA in 21 games in 1979, but he only pitched one game in 1980 then he was traded to the Hanshin Tigers for cash. Sato allowed 8 runs in 4 innings in 1981, and he announced his retirement after staying in the minors for the entire 1982 season. He later coached Fuchu Higashi High School from 1997 to 2007.
Overall, Sato was 13-5 with 15 saves and a 3.62 ERA, struck out 106 and pitched 241 innings in 6 seasons in NPB.
