Biographical Information[edit]

Frank Small began playing organized baseball in Yarmouth, ME in 1885, afterwards enrolling at Maine State College, now known as the University of Maine[1], where he played on the baseball team from 1886 to 1888. In the summer of 1886 he pitched for Rockland, ME in the Maine State League[2]. Small left his college team early in 1887 to pitch for Portland, ME in the New England League, where he excelled, going 31-12, winning nearly half the games for the league's second place club.

After his final college season and graduation, Small went west, having brief stints with Davenport in the Central Inter-State League and the Minneapolis Millers in the Western Association in 1888. After those teams disbanded he played in Augusta, ME. He helped coach the Maine State College baseball team in the spring of 1889, then played the season in Saint John, NB[3]. He returned to play for the city again in 1890, playing for the Saint John Athletic Association club in the New Brunswick League, by which point he was playing more as an outfielder than as a pitcher.

Turning then towards the field of mechanical engineering that he had studied in college, Small taught for a time at the Hampton Institute in Virginia[4]. He later became a skilled golfer and worked in mining in Mexico, New Mexico, and Washington[5].
