Pitcher Elieser Hernandez, was drafted by the Miami Marlins from the Houston Astros in the 2017 Rule V Draft. He was signed Houston as an amateur free agent on May 31, 2012 and played that season and the following one with the DSL Astros. In 2013, he was 5-1, 1.26, earning a trip to the United States the following season. he was 4-1, 2.78 for the GCL Astros in 2014 and also pitched briefly for the Greeneville Astros. 2015 saw him split his time between the Tri-City ValleyCats and the Quad Cities River Bandits, going 3-4, 3.12, and in 2016 he was with Quad Cities and the Lancaster JetHawks of the California League, going a combined 6-8, 4.51.
Hernandez was slowed down by an injury in 2017 and as a result spent time back in the Gulf Coast League on a rehabilitation assignment. He was also with the Class A Buies Creek Astros of the Carolina League, where he was 4-5, 3.98. In spite of his progress having been slowed by injuries and his lack of a full season at any level up to that point, the Marlins took a flyer on him in the Rule V Draft after the Astros failed to add him to their 40-man roster. He was placed on the disabled list at the end of spring training in 2018 because of a tooth infection, then went on a couple of rehabilitation assignments, with the Jupiter Hammerheads and Jacksonville Suns, the latter giving him his first experience at the AA level. On May 10th, he made his debut with the Marlins, pitching 2 scoreless innings in a 9-2 loss to the Atlanta Braves.
