Biographical Information[edit]

Edwin Corps reached AAA; he had previously played for the Puerto Rican national team.

The Chicago Cubs took him in the 19th round of the 1989 amateur draft, one pick after Brian Keyser. He won a Bronze Medal with Puerto Rico in the 1993 Central American and Caribbean Games. [1] He turned pro in 1994 with the San Jose Giants, going 10-6 with a 3.96 ERA. He tied for 10th in the California League in wins and tied Bryan Harris for second in IP (168 1/3), trailing Bob Wolcott. Only Doug Vanderweele pitched more innings in the San Francisco Giants chain and he tied Marino Castillo, Steve Mintz and Jason Myers for 4th in wins.

Moving up to the Shreveport Captains in 1995, he improved to 13-6, 3.86. He tied Gary Rath for the Texas League in wins and joined Rath, Steve Bourgeois, Billy Wagner and Steve Montgomery on the TL All-Star team. [2] He tied Bourgeois and Keith Foulke for the most victories in the Giants farm system. Despite that, he returned to Shreveport in 1996, this time almost entirely in relief; he was 2-3 with a save and a 4.48 ERA. He split 1997 between Shreveport (5-3, 6 Sv, 4.35 in 43 G) and the Phoenix Firebirds (2-1, 5.68 in 7 G). He tied Jim Stoops for 6th in the Giants organization in games pitched (50) and was 9th in saves.

In his fourth season for Shreveport, he was 2-5 with a save and a 3.90 ERA in 46 games. He tied Will Malerich for 9th among San Fran minor leaguers in pitching appearances/ He split 1999 between the Captains (4-4, 4.59 in 24 G) and Fresno (7 R, 3 ER, 11 K in 7 IP). His 6th season with AA Shreveport, he was 5-6 with a 3.12 ERA in 2000. He did not pitch in the minors in 2001. In 2002, he was with the independent Somerset Patriots, posting a 3-7, 5.57 record.

Corps had gone 43-34 with 8 saves and a 4.00 ERA in 254 minor league games. A good hitter for a pitcher, he had batted .243/.356/.270.
