Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Edward Cabrera was signed by the Miami Marlins and an international amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic on July 2, 2015. He began his professional career with the GCL Marlins the following year and reached AA by the end of the 2019 season. He then lost a full year of development when the minor leagues were shut down by the COVID-19 pandemic, but made it to the majors by the end of the 2021 season.

Upon returning to action following the pandemic, the start of his season was delayed by an injury and he played his first games back in Class A. He made 5 starts in AA and 6 in AAA before getting the call to Miami at the end of June. In 7 starts for the Marlins, he went 0-3, 5.81, pitching 26 1/3 innings. 2022 saw him with the same four teams, as injuries were once again a concern, but he was able to make 14 starts in the majors and was very good during these. He finished at 6-4, 3.01 and struck out 75 batters in 71 2/3 innings.

It looked like he had arrived at that point, but in each of the next three seasons, he made at least a couple of starts in AAA with the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp. Sometimes it was because he was recovering from some ailment, and sometimes because he was struggling in the majors. In 2023, he was 7-7, 4.24 in 22 games for Miami, and 3-1, 2.22 in 5 starts in the International League when he was sent down in August. In 2024, his ERA shot up to 4.95 in 20 starts in the majors, and he went 4-8. In both 2023 and 2024, he struck out over 100 batters in fewer than 100 innings, although his walk rate was high both seasons. In 2025, he had his most consistent year thus far, making 26 starts for the Marlins and finishing at 8-7, 3.53. He logged a career-high 137 2/3 innings, struck out 150 batters and walked 48, as his control was much better.

On January 7, 2026, he was traded to the Chicago Cubs in return for three prospects: OF Owen Caissie, who had made his major league debut the previous season, and infielders Cristian Hernandez and Edgardo De Leon, both of whom were still minor leaguers. The Cubs were hoping for a break-out season after four years of battling intermittent injuries. He was a winner in his Cubs debut, which came on March 30, 2026 against the Los Angeles Angels. He gave up just 1 hit and no runs in 6 innings to receive credit for a 7-2 win.
