Biographical Information[edit]
Catcher Eddie Taubensee, also known as Ed, earned the nickname "The Model" because of the way he strutted his stuff on the runway when the Houston Astros revealed their new uniforms in 1994.
His major league career lasted from 1991 to 2001, with his first and last seasons coming with the Cleveland Indians. The rest was with the Astros from 1992 to 1994, and the Cincinnati Reds from 1994 to 2000. He was a starter for much of this time, including appearing in over 100 games in five different seasons, the last four of these being consecutive with the Reds from 1996 to 1999. He had middling power, with four seasons in double figures in home runs, with a career-high of 21 in 1999. He also hit .311 that last year, but because it was at the height of a strong-hitting era in the majors, he did not post his highest OPS+ that year. That came in 1995 when he batted .284 with 9 homers and 44 RBIs in 80 games, for an OPS+ of 122, and he played in the postseason for the only time, going 1 for 2 as the Reds lost to the Atlanta Braves in the NLCS. Benito Santiago was the starter for the Reds that year, but Eddie took over from him the following season.
Following his excellent 1999 season, his production fell back in 2000 and he split catching duties with Santiago, who was back with the Reds after a four-year absence. Following the season, he was traded to Cleveland for pitcher Jim Brower, but his playing time fell again in 2001, to just 52 games, with Einar Diaz getting most of the starts behind the dish. He did not play anywhere in 2002 and was released by the Indians after that season, ending his career. In all, he appeared in 975 games, hitting .273.
Taubensee became a coach with the Augusta GreenJackets in 2017.
