Biographical Information[edit]
During the month of July, 2003, playing for the Texas Rangers, Einar Díaz hit .313 with 10 RBI. His major league career lasted from 1996, when he reached the majors with the Cleveland Indians, until 2006, when he appeared in 3 games for the Los Angeles Dodgers. In between he also played for the Rangers, Montreal Expos and St. Louis Cardinals. He was a catcher with good defensive skills but a light bat, never hitting more than 4 homers in a season in spite of playing in over 100 games in four separate seasons. At the end of his playing career, Diaz was one of the oldest players in the low minors to begin 2007, as the 34-year-old was catching for the Class A Lynchburg Hillcats. He began the year 2 for 23 before moving up to the AAA Indianapolis Indians, where he finished the year.
Diaz turned to coaching in 2008 and was listed as a field coach for both the GCL Orioles and Aberdeen IronBirds. In 2009 he was appointed manager of the Bluefield Orioles in the Appalachian League. In 2011 Díaz became a field coach for the Bowie BaySox and in 2012 was with the Delmarva Shorebirds. Diaz was slated to return to Bowie in 2013, but was promoted to the Baltimore Orioles major league staff as an assistant hitting coach on April 1st. He remained in that position through the 2015 season. Diaz spent 2016 through 2018 as a combination bullpen catcher and major league coach for Baltimore.
Diaz moved to the Atlanta Braves' chain as coach of the Gwinnett Stripers in 2019. He was scheduled to be the hitting coach of the Mississippi Braves in 2020 before the season was cancelled due to COVID-19, then did coach Mississippi in 2021. Diaz was a hitting coach for the FCL Braves in 2022-2023, Augusta GreenJackets in 2024, and FCL Braves again in 2025-2026.
Diaz also has international coaching experience. In 2011, he managed Panama during the Pan American Games and Baseball World Cup. Diaz was a Panamanian coach at the 2013 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers tournament and hitting coach for the 2017 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers tournament team. However, when Panama did manage to qualify for the 2023 World Baseball Classic, he was no longer on the coaching staff. He also coached in the winter Dominican League with the Gigantes del Cibao.
