Biographical Information

"High made a sensational debut with Detroit." - Sporting Life, July 13, 1901 issue, about Lefty High's first major league game

Ed "Lefty" High pitched four games in the new American League with the Detroit Tigers in [[1901 Tigers|1901]. He had a record of 1-0 and an ERA of 3.50 for a team whose overall ERA was 3.30. Although a rookie, at age 27 he was almost the oldest pitcher on the staff.

Ed was good in the first three of his four big league games. He pitched a total of 15 innings in those three games, giving up only 2 earned runs (and 2 unearned runs). Although he gave up 6 walks in his first outing, he gave up zero walks in his next two appearances. However, in his last game in the majors, he pitched three innings and gave up five runs.

The database shows that he played in the minors at least from 1900-1902.

The SABR biography of Hughie Miller states that Miller and Lefty High were "pals" on the sandlots of St. Louis, MO, but that seems unlikely given that High was 11 years older than Miller, and also that Lefty was born and died in Baltimore, MD. It is more likely that one of the other major leaguers named High were the person involved. In particular, Hugh High also played for the Tigers, was a left-handed throwing outfielder and died in St. Louis, MO.
