Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Drew Sommers was at San Diego State University, having appeared in just one game, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. By the time baseball resumed in 2021, he had transferred to Central Arizona College and spent two years there before being drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 11th round of the 2022 amateur draft. He signed with the Rays that summer, but did not make his pro debut until the following season.
Used exclusively as a relief pitcher, he had two good seasons in the Rays' system in 2023 and 2024, going 1-4, 2.72 with 8 saves in 32 games for the Charleston AlleyCats the first year, and 6-3, 4.00 with 2 saves in 42 games for the Bowling Green Hot Rods of the South Atlantic League the second year. He was a postseason All-Star in the Carolina League in 2023. On February 12, 2025, he was traded to the Detroit Tigers in return for pitcher Mason Englert. He was assigned to the AA Erie SeaWolves to start the year, going 2-0, 1.48 in 15 games. He was promoted to the AAA Toledo Mud Hens on May 27th. He went 2-1, 3.31 with 3 saves in 27 games. His contract was selected by the Tigers on August 22nd and he made his debut that same day, pitching a third of an inning in a 7-5 win over the Kansas City Royals. He took over for starter Casey Mize with two outs in the 6th and retired John Rave on a fly ball to end the inning, but in the 7th, he walked the first two batters he faced after Detroit had tied the score, and was replaced by Kyle Finnegan.
