Biographical Information[edit]

Outfielder Doug Welch played in the Chicago Cubs system from 1989 to 1992, peaking at Double-A. He was taken by the club in the 32nd round of the 1989 amateur draft, one pick after pitcher Joe Borowski. His best season was 1990, when he hit .320/.367/.482 with 11 home runs and 68 RBI in 107 games for the Winston-Salem Spirits. He tied Tim Costo for the Carolina League lead in sacrifice flies with 8 that year. He followed that up with 13 home runs and 65 RBI for the Charlotte Knights in 1991. Overall, he hit .265/.317/.399 with 33 homers and 186 RBI in 355 games.
