Biographical Information[edit]

Doc Newton was a right-handed pitcher from Thomasville, NC who attended Cluster Springs Academy and the University of South Carolina. He played one season at South Carolina before beginning an 11-season professional career in 1916.[1] Newton opened with the Piedmont Drybugs and spent four seasons with the International League's Baltimore Orioles, one step from the majors. He also played for the Brantford Red Sox, Orlando Tigers, Birmingham Barons, St. Joseph Saints, Tulsa Oilers, Little Rock Travelers, Greenville Spinners, Kinston Eagles, Albany Nuts, Selma Selmians, and Gadsden Eagles. In 1928, he also managed Gadsden in the Georgia-Alabama League.

After his playing career, Newton moved into coaching. He worked as head baseball coach at Howard College in 1926 and 1929, and later served as head baseball coach at North Carolina State University from 1940 through 1944, with a composite record of 29-67-2.[1][2][3] He spent much of his later career in college football as well, including head coaching stints at Davidson College and North Carolina State University.[4][5]
