Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Dietrich Enns was taken by the New York Yankees in the 19th round of the 2012 amateur draft and began his professional career that year. He dominated at every level of pro ball before making his major league debut in 2017.
He began as a relief pitcher and posted a 2.11 ERA in 22 appearances his first year. In 2013, his mark was 2.94 and he had 112 strikeouts in 82 2/3 innings and in 2014, he had a 1.42 ERA in 25 1/3 innings, while averaging more than a strikeout per frame. 2015 saw him transition to the rotation and he went 2-1 with a 0.61 ERA in 13 games (12 starts), allowing just 4 earned runs in 58 1/3 innings (granted, he was a 24-year-old pitching in rookie-level and High A ball). In 2016, he was 14-4 with a 1.73 ERA in 26 games (22 starts), allowing just 102 hits in 135 innings. In his first taste of Triple A that year, he was 7-2 with a 1.52 ERA in 14 games (10 starts).
He was a Mid-Season All-Star in 2013 and 2016 and a MiLB.com Organization All-Star in 2016. On July 30, 2017, he was one of two prospects sent by the Yankees to the Minnesota Twins in return for P Jaime Garcia. He made his big league debut with the Twins less than two weeks later, on August 10th, starting against the Milwaukee Brewers. He appeared in just two games that season, without a decision, and then made another brief appearance in the majors with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2021. That year, he pitched 9 times, all in relief, going 2-0, 2.82 with 2 saves. That was pretty promising, but in 2022, he decided to move to Japan to continue his career, pitching for the Seibu Lions of the Pacific League that year and in 2023. He went 10-7, 2.94 the first year, but the second he fell to 1-10, 5.17 in 12 games and spent the remainder of the season in ni-gun, where he pitched much better.
In 2024, he moved to the Korea Baseball Organization. He had a very good season with the LG Twins, going 13-6, 4.19 in 30 starts and 167 2/3 innings. That prompted the Detroit Tigers to give him another look in 2025. He started the year in the minors with the Toledo Mud Hens, going 2-2, 2.89 in his first 14 starts. On June 26th, he made his return to the majors after five years, being called up to start against The Athletics; it was also his first big league start since his major league debut in 2017. He did very well, allowing just 1 hit and no runs in 5 innings, and received credit for an 8-0 win. The had been an interval of 1,371 days since his last big league appearance.
