Biographical Information[edit]
Dave Denton played in the minor leagues and in Nippon Pro Baseball.
Denton was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 11th round of the 1976 Amateur Draft (one round before Reid Nichols), and he hit .260/.348/.368 in 61 games for the Elmira Pioneers in 1976. His .968 fielding at second base led the New York-Penn League and he was named the loop's All-Star at that position. He also went 3-for-13 with the AA Bristol Red Sox, and he had a .203/.270/.233 batting line there in 39 games in 1977. Denton improved to .261/.316/.340 in Bristol in 1978, his 375 assists leading Eastern League second sackers (30 ahead of #2 Roger Holt). He then crushed 9 homers with a .201/.284/.317 batting line in 1979 for the Pawtucket Red Sox, splitting second with Buddy Hunter in a full season at AAA.
He then played in Mexico for 2 years, but not in the Mexican League. The Yakult Swallows signed him in 1982. However, he struggled as his batting line was .207/.261/.244 in 42 games (backing up Susumu Watanabe at second), and he left the team. Denton returned to the USA with the Chicago Cubs in 1984, and he hit .261/.360/.311 in 61 games for the Lodi Crushers. He also played 39 games with a .280/.323/.366 batting line for the AA Midland Cubs, and he announced his retirement.
Overall, Denton hit .242/.315/.326 with 352 hits and 20 homers in 5 seasons in the minor leagues.
