In 1955, the Columbus (OH) Red Birds left the American Association when the St. Louis Cardinals moved the team to Omaha. Eleven local fans chipped in $10,000 apiece to buy Red Bird Stadium (renamed Jets Stadium) and the Ottawa A's of the International League, who were renamed the Columbus Jets. The Jets were affiliates of the Kansas City A's for two years, then allied with the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1957-70. Future Hall of Famer Willie Stargell played for the club in '62. The team won IL penants in '61 and '65. In '71, the city's refusal to refurbish the aging stadium (then 39 years old) led the Pirates to move the team to Charleston, WV, where they became the Charleston Charlies.
