Biographical Information[edit]

Infielder Carlos García played professional baseball from 1987-2001. He spent 1990-1999 in the major leagues, principally with the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 1995, he had a 21-game hitting streak in June and then a 15-game hitting streak in September for Pittsburgh. In his 10 year major league career, Garcia hit .266/.307/.374 while playing in 610 games. He finished his playing career in 2001 with the AAA Columbus Clippers.

Garcia started his coaching career in 2002 as a player/coach for the Buffalo Bisons. He continued as the Bisons full-time hitting & infield coach for the 2003-2004 seasons. The Seattle Mariners hired Garcia in 2005 as their first base & infield coach before switching him to third base on August 13th. He remained the Mariners third base coach through 2007.

The Pirates brought Garcia back to Pittsburgh in 2008-2009 as the organization's Minor League Infield Coordinator. For the 2010 season, Garcia was named the Pirates' first base coach and infield instructor, replacing Perry Hill in both roles. He then became a manager in the Pirates' minor league system starting in 2011. The 2014 season managing the Altoona Curve brought the U.S. portion of Garcia's coaching career to a close.

Garcia also has extensive experience coaching in other countries, especially in Venezuela. He was a coach for the Venezuelan national team in both the 2013 World Baseball Classic, 2017 World Baseball Classic, 2019 Premier 12 and 2021 Americas Olympic Qualifier. Through most of his Venezuelan experience, he worked with the Navegantes del Magallanes. He may have coached for the team in 2004/2005. Garcia managed the team in 2009/2010 and 2011/2012. He started the following season as the team's manager, but was dismissed on November 19th. The Navigators brought him back on January 1, 2014 for the remainder of that season's playoffs. Garcia returned to managing Navegantes on a full-time basis in 2015/2016 until his dismissal once again on December 4, 2016. The next season he started as bench coach of the Tigres de Aragua before taking over as manager on January 7, 2018. Garcia ventured into the Mexican League as manager of the Acereros del Norte in 2018. The Mexican League tried a two season formula that year which did not go over well with fans. Garcia managed during the first season, but left for personal reasons before the second season. Back in the Venezuelan League, Garcia served as the Tiburones de La Guaira hitting coach in 2018/2019. He returned to manage Navegantes in 2020/2021, but was removed with one game remaining in the semi-finals, ostensibly because he contracted COVID-19.[1] Garcia managed Venezuela in the 2021 U-23 Baseball World Cup, 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games and 2023 Pan American Games.
