Biographical Information[edit]

Carl Ridgley, who was known as Duke because of his fashion sense, was born in Milton, WV on December 8, 1889[1]. He played professionally for the Huntington Blue Sox in 1911 in the Mountain States League and again in 1913 when Huntington was a member of the Ohio State League.[2][3]

In 1919, Ridgley coached the baseball team at Marshall College[4]. He later became a longtime sportswriter for the Herald-Dispatch in Huntington, beginning on July 4, 1919, and he is credited with giving Marshall the nickname "Thundering Herd"[5][6][7]. He died in Lexington, KY on February 14, 1962[2].
