Biographical Information[edit]
C.J. Stubbs played for the Israeli national team before making his major league debut in 2025. He is the brother of Garrett Stubbs. [1]
Stubbs was 6-4 with a 1.57 ERA as a high school senior and hit .306. His coach at Torrey Pines High School was former major league pitcher Kirk McCaskill. [2] He was 2-1 with a 3.86 ERA as a college freshman and was 0 for 8 at the plate. He fell to 2-5, 5.04 as a sophomore and did not bat then missed 2018 due to injury. [3] As a senior, he was moved to catcher and hit .285/.378/.466.
The Houston Astros took him in the 10th round of the 2019 amateur draft; the scout was Tim Costic. [4] That summer, he played for the Tri-City ValleyCats (.213/.327/.386 in 39 G) and Quad Cities River Bandits (.328/.371/.621, 16 RBI in 16 G). After the 2020 minor league season was wiped out by COVID-19, he returned in 2021 with the Asheville Tourists (.229/.296/.455 in 67 G) and Corpus Christi Hooks (.191/.299/.226 in 24 G). He threw out 37% of those who tried to steal and went deep 12 times in 337 at-bats but struck out 131 times.
His K rate remained high in 2022 (128 in 271 AB) with Asheville (.217/.347/.471 in 42 G) and Corpus Christi (.211/.323/.504 in 41 G), but he showed good pop (21 HR) and speed (14 SB, 2 CS). He tied Enmanuel Valdez for 7th in the Astros chain in dingers. He was a late addition to the Israeli squad for the 2023 World Baseball Classic, after his brother got hurt in the middle of the tournament. [5] Backing up Ryan Lavarnway, he played one game, hitting cleanup against the powerful Dominican national team. He struck out against Roansy Contreras and Génesis Cabrera and flew out versus Héctor Neris plus had a passed ball in a rough day. [6] He spent most of that season with Corpus Christi, although he did make it to AAA with one game with the Sugar Land Space Cowboys. His overall batting line in 96 games was .203/.318/.388, with 14 homers and 33 RBIs.
In 2024, CJ played for two teams each in the Astros and the Washington Nationals organizations, after having been released by Houston and signed as a free agent by Washington in May. He played in AA and AAA in both cases, with his longest stint being with the Harrisburg Senators of the AA Eastern League. He hit .187/.314/.335 in 81 games. He did not fare much better with the bat in 2025, once again splitting his time between AA and AAA and now relegated to the role of back-up catcher. He hit just .148 in 66 games but was still called up to Washington when rosters expanded on September 1st. He made his debut at catcher, starting and batting ninth against the Miami Marlins. He formed a battery with Andrew Alvarez, who was also making his debut and who he had caught in the minors. He went 0 for 3, but Washington won the game, 2-0.
